DIY Wooden Painted Arrow Sign

In this post, I’m going to show you how to create one of these little beauties that are so versatile.

Wood arrows can be used for all kinds of decor. It can be used in just about any holiday decor. It can be used in weddings or another event decor as a cute way to direct people where to go. You can even use it in your regular day home decor in any room in the house. It’s a great staple to have in your decor arsenal; using it as a filler.

So, how do you make one of these bad Larrys? It’s easy! I’ll show you.

Must have supplies for DIY Painted Arrow Sign

Materials

  • Wood (any size or thickness you desire)

  • Paint (any color and any type. You’ll need at least 2 colors; 1 for the wood and 1 for the arrow. *You have the option to use stain too if you desire.)

  • Paintbrushes (at least one in a large-ish size to quickly paint the entire wood piece in a couple of strokes and a medium to small size, especially if you plan to try hand painting your arrow)

  • Arrow style you want to use

  • Vinyl (If you’ve used it before and have a machine to make your arrow, you can choose to get vinyl instead of painting your arrow.)

Now that you have your materials let’s get creating!
How To Paint a Wood Sign

How To Make It

Step 1:

Paint the wood. Spread the paint evenly over your wood piece. You want to use a medium consistency of thickness. The best method would be to get a good chunk of paint on your brush and spread it around on your wood piece until you run out of paint on your brush. Repeat this process, taking a little bit less paint each time.

Allow the wood time to dry before attempting to add another layer of paint if it needs it. If you can still see the wood then it needs another layer of paint. Check the wood every 5-10 minutes or so to see if it is dry.

Once your wood piece is adequately covered with paint and is dry, you can move on to the next step!

How To Paint an Arrow

Step 2:

The arrow!

There are many different ways you can go about making your arrow. You can choose to free-hand it-take one of the smaller brushes and slowly and carefully paint the arrow style you chose. You can purchase an arrow stencil or you can make your own with your printer.

Find an arrow picture you like,

print it out in the size that you need it for your sign,

cut it out,

use painter’s tape to tape it to the wood,

trace your arrow with a pencil or colored pencil,

and then paint over the pencil.

Once again let the paint dry and then determine if it needs another layer. It will look best if you cannot see the paint color that you chose for the wood.

AND DONE!

As I said, they are rather simple to make. The only hiccup is that they can be a bit time-consuming as you have to wait for the paint to dry before you can proceed onto the next painting task.

A way to shorten the time by a smidge is to cut it out of vinyl or purchase an arrow sticker of the style and size you want.

I like to use paint instead of vinyl for a couple of reasons:

*It’s cheaper-I can use the same paint for multiple arrows or for other crafts

*If I want to change the arrow or use the wood piece for a different project it is a much simpler task of removing the arrow-either by painting over it or sanding it away.

*Plus I feel more like a professional artist when I paint on the arrow!

Have fun exploring this craft; whether it be by the way you make it or the way you display it!
