How To Make A Nightstand in 5 Easy Steps

When my husband and I moved in together we saved money by using furniture we already had or that was given to us. Well, for a long time my Husband used an old tv stand as his nightstand and when we moved into our bedroom we quickly realized that it couldn’t be used as a nightstand any longer.

Wanting to save money, we decided to use two wooden crates from our wedding as a makeshift nightstand for him-as I already had one that I was happy with. The crates were a perfect nightstand however, they didn’t really match anything in the room-we had left them raw wood for our wedding. So I spruced them up with some simple materials that I already had and now they look like I bought them from the store-plus they match!

Now, while this project was super easy, it was time-consuming. There is a lot of surface area to paint and time waiting for the paint to dry but I loved every minute of it-very relaxing.

Without further adieu…

Here’s how to make your own wooden crate nightstand!

Materials

  • 2 Wooden Crates

  • A 1 ½ or 2-inch paintbrush

  • A less than an inch paintbrush

  • 20oz container of paint-color of your choosing (I did white!)

  • Roughly 50 yards of thin cord/rope or Jute twine

  • Tacky glue or hot glue (optional)-I didn’t use any but you may want to for sanity's sake.

  • 180 grit Sandpaper

How To Make A Wooden Crate Nightstand

Step 1

Sand each crate; just enough to smooth out the rough spots on the wood.

Step 2

Wipe down each crate with a damp paper towel or cloth.

Step 3

Paint the crates!

*If your container of paint is big enough for your brush, you can just work from that or you can dump your paint into a plastic cup or bowl to make it easier.*

**Make sure the paint is completely dry before applying another coat.**

Step 4

Once the paint is completely dry, it’s time to wrap the handles.

Take your rope or twine, roll out roughly 10 yards, glue one end to the inside of the handle, and wrap it around. Continue doing this until the whole handle has been wrapped.

*You can choose how many layers you want for your handle. I did 2 layers.

When you are done wrapping, glue the end to the rest of the rope or twine.

**If you chose not to use glue then you will be trying to use the rope or twine to hold your ends. When you are done wrapping, you will try to tuck the end into the rest of the rope or twine. (This is the method I chose)**

Step 5

Stack your crates on top of each other with the opening facing the rest of the room.

AND DONE!

If you find that you do not like the open slits on the top, you can choose any of the following-or something else to cover them:

  • A tray

  • A thin piece of wood

  • Shelf liner
