Your Complete Guide To A Modern Kitchen

Show of hands, how many of you believe that you have a modern kitchen or are confident you know what one looks like?

I’m not gonna lie, not that long ago I would have hesitated to put my hand up.

Design styles can be challenging to figure out on your own, especially when designers fail to tell you that every space in a home is typically a combination of two or more styles.

So while two different kitchens may be considered “modern”, one might have more of an industrial look while the other has more of a boho look.

Today I want to clear up some of that confusion.

In this post, you will learn the basic foundation for a modern kitchen design.

What Does Modern Mean

In terms of home design style, Modern means the following:

  • Clean lines

  • Smooth/Sleek Surfaces

  • Only the essentials

  • Minimal decor

  • Function and Form over Story and Sentiment

What Does A Modern Kitchen Actually Look Like

The following are different pictures of “Modern” kitchens. Below each picture, I describe which parts of the design hold true to the definition of modern.

The countertops are smooth and sleek. There is minimal decor with the plant, vases, and backsplash being the decorative element to this spaces. While the cabinets from a distance may look Modern; their wood grain is not.

More clean lines and smooth/sleek surfaces everywhere you look in this kitchen. Even with the open shelves, there is minimal decor. The things that are NOT Modern are the following: wood grain cabinets, marbled floor, and counter. That’s it!

Most people would say this is Modern. Do you think you can figure out by now what parts are and are not Modern?

The following is Modern:

Countertop, appliances, Stove hood, hardware, and the cabinets are both!

*Due to their lack of wood grain or texture they are considered modern but the molding on and around them makes them not modern as they are not a smooth/ sleek surface.

The following is NOT Modern:

Chairs, floor, backsplash, decor on the counter, and the lights

And There You Have It!
